UKAHFT COURSE SET UP 2010

The Course will be set up using the following combinations of targets, which may be set on the ground, up trees or anywhere else in-between. Please remember the emphasis is on setting out the course to simulate hunting scenarios, rabbits in long grass, squirrels in trees, rats in pipes etc and not just plain target shooting, Use anything available including drainage pipes, cages, hay bails, logs, pallets etc to make the course more interesting, as realistic as possible with varied target distances over the whole range (8 to 45 yards)

When setting out courses you must place targets and pegs to allow for both right & left handed and Junior shooters taking part in the event.

TARGETS (and Permitted Distances)

• 15mm to 19mm Hit zone Targets from 13yds up to a maximum of 25 yd's.

• 20mm to 24mm Hit zone Targets from 8yds up to a maximum of 30 yd's.

• 25mm to 34mm Hit zone Targets from 8yds up to a maximum of 35 yd's.

• 35mm to 45mm Hit zone Targets from 8yds up to a maximum of 45 yd's. A maximum of 6 of these targets can have up to 50% of The Hit zone obscured with the exception of standing or kneeling shots where 100% must be visible.

• There must be NO OBSTRUCTIONS in the shooters line of sight from the firing point within 8 yards of the rifle muzzle to avoid any possible dangerous ricochets

THE COURSE

30 Target positions with 1 firing point for each will be set out of which

o 3… Must be standing shots using 35mm to 45 mm hit zones only and un-obscured…use terrain to force these, Max 35yards, Minimum of 2.. Of these must allow the shooter support on a tree or other inanimate object. There must be a “Standing only” sign in place at the peg

o 3… Must be kneeling shots using 35mm to 45 mm hit zones only and un-obscured …use terrain to force these. Max 35yards. Minimum of 2... of these must allow the shooter support on a tree or other inanimate object . There must be a “Kneel or Stand” sign in place at the peg

o 3… Must be prone ONLY shots using any UKAHFT hit zone size …use terrain or placed objects to force these. There must be a “Prone only” sign in place at the peg

The remaining 21 targets must be placed so each target is able to be shot from at least the prone & kneeling position. We suggest you use your local flora and other features to make the targets more interesting.

• The course should be set out using a total of :

o Min 2, max 4 ….15mm to 19mm kill zone targets (not to be used for Standing or kneeling Shots)

o Min 4, max 6 ….20mm to 34mm kill zone targets (not to be used for Standing or kneeling Shots)

o All remaining targets should be … 35mm to 45mm kill zones

SAFETY CONSIDERATIONS

• All targets must have a suitable backstop or a safe fall out zone behind.

• When setting out the shooting lanes, ensure other lanes do not encroach on the line of sight within 45 degrees either side of the target on that lane.

• Try to keep lanes/pegs either in a straight line or in a horseshoe shape, firing outwards and avoid forward pegs, which could endanger one shooter from another shooter standing behind on a neighbouring peg

• Ensure you firing lines are clearly defined.

• Rope or barrier off any routes, which could permit shooters or other persons to enter into the firing/fallout zones. Consider areas suitable for spectators to view from if possible.

PEGS

• 25 Wooden/plastic peg and maximum of 5 discs can be included (targets shot from discs must not be no more than 6 foot (1.8 meters) above ground level. All pegs should be clearly visible and project above ground level by at least 300mm all discs should be a minimum of 225 mm diameter

• Shooting points must be placed in positions allowing shooter including juniors and left handers to get into position and view the target.

• All shooting points to be clearly marked No’s 1 to 30 inclusive. And likewise the corresponding targets.

• Check there is no broken glass, brambles, insect nests or other such hazardous materials around.
